VOLLEYBALL WA LAUNCHES MULTICULTURAL UNIFORM GUIDE

Volleyball WA is leading the charge for inclusion with the launch of a nation first initiative aimed at getting women and girls from multicultural backgrounds in to sport. The project was created by the WA Government to help advocate ways for females from multicultural backgrounds to participate in sport.

As one of the state’s largest sports with a high number of culturally and linguistically diverse participants, Volleyball WA has created a guide to showcase a range of multicultural female uniform options for both Indoor and Beach volleyball.

“Volleyball is a game for all and we are committed to advocating the value of physical activity for all peoples, regardless of their background. This uniform guide is an innovative and important step in our mission to promote inclusivity in volleyball. ” Volleyball WA CEO Robyn Kuhl said.

“Our hope is this will not only encourage more females from multicultural backgrounds to participate, but more importantly feel comfortable doing so in a culturally appropriate way.”

The Minister for Sport and Recreation, Mick Murray, launched the seven sport initiative at the Sport and Recreation WA Conference Room on Wednesday.

“These uniform guides mean women and girls who would otherwise be unable to play sport because of cultural or religious clothing requirements can now join a team and be involved the same as anyone else.” Sport & Recreation Minister Mick Murray said.

“Diversity is one of our State’s greatest strengths. These uniforms will help level the playing field for Western Australians of all cultural backgrounds to get involved with their sports clubs and communities.” Citizenship & Multicultural Interests Minister Paul Papalia added.

The WA Government partnered with Communicare Inc. to create the guides in consultation with CaLD participants, community leaders, and State Sporting Associations including the West Australian Football Commission, Basketball WA, WACA, Gymnastics WA, Netball WA, Football West, and Volleyball Western Australia. The guide was inspired by Royal Life Saving Society’s Female Multicultural Swimwear Guide and will be an important resource to encourage more multicultural females to participate in sport.
