The Australian men’s indoor volleyball team, the Volleyroos, face the 2018 World Champions in the opening game of the Volleyball Nations League
The Australian men’s indoor volleyball coach, Mark Lebedew, says his side will be under pressure from the start of the Volleyball Nations League (VNL), which gets underway next week in Poland. Lebedew is referring to his side having to play the three teams that medalled at the last World Championships on the opening weekend.
The Volleyroos’ opening game will be against the 2018 World Championships gold medalists, Poland, followed by matches against the teams, which won silver and bronze at last year’s Worlds; Brazil, and the United States.
It is the start of a hectic five week schedule involving the top 16 teams in the world playing in four pools of four teams in a round robin series, before the playoffs. The Volleyroos will play the final round in Brisbane from 28 June against last year’s VNL champions, Russia, as well as China and Argentina.
Mark Lebedew says managing fatigue will be important; ”The load is very high, and we do not have a huge squad. How we stagger the workloads in training and during the respective weekends will be important.”
The Australian side heads into the VNL following three friendlies against the Czech Republic in which the Volleyroos won two and lost one game.
