Helloworld Travel Volleyroos lose to Russia in their first game at the World Championships

The Australian men’s volleyball team have gone down 3 sets to nil to the powerhouse Russian side in their opening game at 2018 World Championship in Bari, Italy, this morning.

The world number four ranked Russian team had to fight all the way against the world number 14, Australian.

The Volleyroos applied the most pressure in the opening two sets before Russia asserted their dominance in the 3rd to win 25-21, 25-20,25-16.

Russia entered the world titles as one of the pre-tournament favourites after winning the Volleyball Nations League, and last year’s European Championship.

Australian captain, Paul Carroll, was one of his side’s best. He says, “We have just faced one of the best teams in the world. The good play we made in the first and second set wasn’t enough to match up to Russia. Their service caused us many problems during the decisive moments of the match. Despite our defeat we showed a great performance. We hope to have the same mind set in the next match against the United States.”

The U.S. team is the world number two-ranked side.
