Australian men’s indoor volleyball player, Arash Dosanjh, is more aware than most, of the strength of Polish volleyball. The Volleyroos are currently preparing to play the Poles in their opening game of the VNL in Poland.
Arash has been playing club volleyball in Poland this season after being lured from his team in Switzerland by Volleyroos coach, Mark Lebedew.
The Polish competition is regarded as the best in the world and with their strongest side possible playing this weekend, the world champions will be formidable. But Arash says the Poles are not unbeatable, “I am excited about playing this team. I know a lot of them through playing club volleyball in Poland but I wouldn’t be surprised if we caused an upset.”
The game against Poland effectively starts a five week campaign of 15 games in five different countries for the Volleyroos. Despite the heavy schedule, Arash says his side has no issues with this; “It’s reasonably tough, but it’s tough for everyone; we have to manage it.”
Arash says his own game has improved by playing week-in-week-out in Poland. He’s excited by what his team is capable of achieving; “We see this as an opportunity to raise the level of our game.”
He also sees it as great preparation for the Olympic qualifiers, which start in July, with Australia taking on Italy, Serbia and Cameroon.
For the time being though, the focus is very much on success in the VNL with the final round before the playoffs taking place in Brisbane. This is where Australia will come up against the reigning VNL champions Russia, China and Argentina.
