Queensland is poised to continue its domination in Australian sport on the Gold Coast at the Australian Junior Volleyball Championships.
As the week long tournament reaches its climax the host state has secured the right to play off for the Gold Medal in a record all 11 divisions.
Tournament Director Jon Gibbs says “it’s unprecedented to see all the Maroon teams in with a chance at Gold, an amazing effort”.
South Australia, Western Australia and Victoria might have something to say about that as they take on the hosts in the 6 major championship divisions.
“There’s plenty of firepower here and there’s plenty of ways to lose a medal match” Says Gibbs.
The South Australia U19 boys plan to spoil the party and take home Gold after overcoming some heated encounters with the highly rated NSW team along the way.
Captain Jayden Fathers is confident they can stop QLD and take the gold medal home to Adelaide “we aren’t as big as them but I think we have the agility and a team that is ready to give it our all and leave nothing on the court”.
The U19 girls from Western Australia also plan to upset the locals after inflicting heartbreak on South Australia in their division. It was a three way tie on top of their table with Queensland and WA with the South Aussies cruelly missing out on a count back.
WA captain Victoria Wells says they haven’t come this far to lose to QLD “we’ve worked so hard to get here we are not going to let it slip now, we’ve come too far. This is my 5th tournament I’ve never won a medal, this team is special and we are going to put in a good fight”
South Australia might have missed out on a Gold Medal appearance in the U19 girls but they will be represented in both the U15 and U17 boys championship divisions!
Victoria’s U17 girls coach Sue Rice has no doubt her team will knock off QLD for gold “oh its us its us all the way down the line.. Id like to say 3 luv but Tim (Qld coach) will probably see this…it will be a very good game they are a very good team”.
Victoria will also be represented in the U15 girls against an undefeated Queensland side.
