Dan Ilott appointed head coach of the German under 21 men’s national team program

After 20 years coaching within the Volleyball Australia (VA) High Performance system, Dan Ilott is departing to take up a role within the German Volleyball Federation.

Dan has been appointed as the head coach of the German under 21 men’s national team program. The group of players he will be coaching are currently the European Youth Champions and will be competing in the World U19 Men’s championships in August before they progress to the under 21 program. “It’s a big decision for me and my family. Professionally, it is a great opportunity to continue my coaching ambitions, but also an amazing life experience for us as a family” says Dan.

Since joining VA’s Coaching staff in 1999 in preparation for the Sydney Olympics, Dan has helped the Australian Men’s National Team to qualify to two Olympics (Athens and London) and 5 Senior World Championships. His involvement, in over 500 matches with our National teams puts him in a very elite group of coaches and makes him difficult to replace.

Dan is currently the head coach of Volleyball Australia’s AIS men’s Centre of Excellence program. It’s a role he has carried out with distinction for the past ten years. He will work with VA’s under 23 men’s team at the Asian Championships, which end on 12 August. He will then start a four-year contract with the German Volleyball Federation in mid-August based out of the Olympic training centre in Berlin.

Dan says it has been an honour to deliver the Centre of Excellence program for the past 10 years; “I have really enjoyed my time working with both the Senior men’s program and the COE program here in Canberra. There have been so many positive experiences over the years in the various roles I have performed for VA and the National programs. It has been my passion to continually find ways to develop the level of volleyball here in Australia at every level and help improve the quality and performance of our senior Volleyroo’s teams. I leave the COE program and VA knowing that I have helped many athletes on their Volleyball journey over the years for which I am immensely proud.”

The new role involves coaching the German under 21 men’s team in the German Bundesliga 2nd Division in 2019 and progressing to 1st Division in 2020 as well as coaching the team in various International competitions.

When asked about the program in Berlin Dan said, “The German volleyball federation has a rich Volleyball history, a very strong professional league and a great program already in place for identifying and developing young talent in Germany that is clearly working very well. It is a great privilege to be chosen to work in this program and I am looking forward to a new challenge working with a group of talented athletes and coaches in a country where Volleyball has a much higher public profile.”

VA’s National Technical Director, Phil Borgeaud, says the appointment is a great validation of Dan’s high standing in International volleyball.
