The Australian Volleyball Academy (AVA) has returned to delivering its centralised development program at the Australian Institute of Sport only 9 weeks after the COVID-19 pandemic temporarily suspended operations at the high-performance facility.
The Canberra based athletes commenced their on-site daily training and Strength and Conditioning sessions from Tuesday this week. All sessions are being conducted within the new COVID-19 restrictions of limiting numbers of athletes, alongside stricter hygiene protocols before, during and after training sessions.
AVA athlete Caitlin Tipping who has spent the last few months in isolation in Canberra is very eager to be back into her daily training environment saying, “I’m so excited to get back onto the court and gym to start making gains again and make up for lost time.”
Whilst stage 3 COVID-19 restrictions were in place, athletes were provided with a remote based program for them to follow in their home training environment. As well as training drills, the program delivered online workshops covering a range of topics such as nutrition, injury management, and athlete wellbeing.
“The COVID-19 pandemic was a very challenging time for all. Hopefully, we were able to provide some support and knowledge to our AVA athletes in this trying time,” said Volleyball Australia’s Athlete Wellbeing Manager Gearoid Towey.
AVA and Women’s Volleyroos Head Coach Martin Collins is thrilled to be back on-site saying, “We are very happy that our athletes have stayed safe and active during this team with the ability for those that had relocated to Canberra to spend some extended time with their family. This period has taught us all a lot, and I know how fortunate we are to be able to train together as a team now.”
The primary objective of the Australian Volleyball Academy (AVA) is to identify and develop Olympic potential athletes for Volleyball and Beach Volleyball. It is the High-Performance Development Program for volleyball and beach volleyball athletes who aspire to reach the elite level of their sport.
