Australian teams dominate the opening weekend of VolleyFest at Manly Beach

Local teams have won both the men’s and women’s Australian Beach Volleyball Championships at Manly Beach.

In the women’s the world number seven-ranked Australian combination of Taliqua Clancy and Mariafe Artacho Del Solar started slowly then recovered to beat their Japanese opponents 2-1 in the final. The Australians lost the first set 21-16 against Miki Ishii and Megumi Murakami before winning the next two sets 21-17, 15-10.

Earlier, Clancy and Artacho Del Solar accounted for fellow Australians Nikki Laird and Becchara Palmer 2-0 to make it through to the final.

In the men’s, Australia’s Chris McHugh and Zachery Schubert defeated the French combination of Arnaud Gauthier and Quincy Aye in the final 2-0.

Chris McHugh said, " We had a fantastic tournament here at the Australian Championships as part of Volleyfest 2019. This has been a great building block for our team and we have taken many steps of progress this weekend. Zachery delivered in some tense situations this weekend and kept us a live late last night in the quarter final. This is his first Australian Senior Championship and couldn't have been prouder of him.

The french guys played great all weekend and are sure to push hard next week in the 3 star event."

The focus now turns to the 3-Star FIVB Tour event at Manly Beach this week; the biggest Beach Volleyball tournament staged in Australia since the Sydney Olympics.
