The Oceania Continental Cup phase 1 starts in Mt Maunganui New Zealand this afternoon.
Representing Australia are Chris McHugh/Damien Schumann, Max Guehrer/Zac Schubert with reserve Paul Burnett.
In total there are 5 teams competing in the Men’s competition.
The prize at the end of this tournament is direct entry into Continental Cup final in late June. The Australian women have already achieved direct entry to the finals due to winning the 2016 edition.
Decisions made at this morning’s technical meeting determined Quarter finals start this afternoon. However, Australia have direct entry into the semi finals tomorrow morning at 1000 am v Tuvalu.
The tournament format is country v country, with team 1 v team 1 and team 2 v team 2, if there is a tie after these matches a “Golden match” is played to determine the winner.
Damien Schumann “These continental cup tournaments are unique not only because of the format but with so much on the line they always make for some pretty amazing games”
Max Guehrer “I really enjoy this continental cup format being country v country. I can’t wait to fight with all our Aussie boys here”
Andrew Schacht AUS Head Coach “after a long wait it is “D-day” for our Aussie men in our Olympic qualification (this phase has been delayed since November due to a measles outbreak in Fiji). It will be a tough battle, we have prepared well over the past month’s international tournaments in Thailand and Cambodia. We are ready to take the next step in our Olympic journey to Tokyo 2020.”
