Australian squads

To align with the two-yearly cycle of World Under-Age Championships (held on odd years for Under 19, 21 and 23), the Junior Men's Development Program (JMDP) operates in squads of athletes born across a two year grouping. Accordingly, the paired age-groups and the under-age category (e.g. Under 19s or Under 21s) are based on the age-group for the next Youth (Under 19) or Junior (Under 21) World Championships.

The age-groups are categorised into pre-youth, youth and junior squads.  The current squads are:

pre-youth born 2005-2006
youth born 2003-2004
junior born 2001-2002

A Youth team will represent Australia in the Asian Under 18 Championships in 2020 and potentially the Under 19 World Championships in 2021.  The Junior team will represent Australia in the Asian Under 20 Championships in 2020 and potentially the Under 21 World Championships in 2021.

Centre of Excellence

The Men's Volleyball Centre of Excellence (CoE) was established at the Australian Institute of Sport in 1997 having grown from its beginnings in Sydney in 1990. The program’s purpose was to develop world-class athletes to contribute to the performance of our senior men’s volleyball team now known as the Men’s Volleyroos. The program provides a full-time, world-class daily training environment for men’s indoor volleyball at the home of our senior Volleyroos.

The benefits and criticality of the program are unquestionable. Every member of the 2012 London Olympic Team progressed through the program and ever-increasing numbers of program athletes are playing professionally in Europe or at college in the US or Canada on a volleyball scholarship.

Notwithstanding the success of the CoE, it should be noted that this is not the only pathway to the senior team, a college scholarship or a professional volleyball career; nor does it guarantee one of these outcomes.

Development opportunities

Outside of the CoE, the JMDP provides a range of development opportunities.  The table below provide indicative information regarding the development opportunities for each squad. While there are a number of opportunities, it is not expected that an athlete will attend them all, or even most of them. We will work with parents, athletes and coaches to prioritise camps and tours based on your individual circumstances. Further to these opportunities, please review the timings of local rising stars camps; it would be great to see everyone at these camps.

The indicative schedule with more information regarding possible dates, costs and guides for these camps can be viewed at this link: https://goo.gl/TBU7qM

Selection policy

Age-group squads will be selected annually based on current performance and future potential. These squads will form the basis of invitations for camps and tours over the year. New talent identified throughout the year may also be invited to program activities. The pre-youth and youth squads will be announced within a week of the December camp.  The junior squad will be announced within a week of the July camp.

The selection committee for Championship events will be chaired by the Pathways Director with the selection committee comprising the Centre of Excellence head coach, program head coach and program manager. The selection for development camps and tours will be chaired by the program manager.

The selection committee will consider the following selection criteria:

  • VA, AVC, FIVB and AOC eligibility criteria;
  • physical, mental and emotional attributes of a successful senior international volleyball athlete;
  • athlete and team international performance in previous years as appropriate;
  • athlete performance during development and selection camps/tours;
  • athlete performance during the Australian Junior Volleyball Championships and State-based events/camps;
  • the perceived ability to be selected in future Volleyroos squads;
  • the perceived ability to contribute to the squad/team (skills and behaviours);
  • the perceived potential to contribute at the next three Olympics;
  • commitment to the national program and to following the national direction as specified by the program manager and head coach;
  • the athlete’s availability to compete in and prepare for the relevant Championship events and/or development activities; and
  • injury status and competition readiness.

The weight given to each criterion will be totally at the discretion of the selection committee, and the weight may vary dependent on the selection decision being considered and the timing of that decision. There are no grounds for appeal for junior camps and tours.
